BMW to refresh 1 Series; hatchback variant becomes the first model to get full revamp

BMW has geared up to refresh the BMW 1 Series line-up. The testing trials towards this are underway in full swing. The report also indicates that 1 Series Hatchback Concept will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011. Brian Harris BMW is eager to welcome the new 1 Series’ revamped variants and add them to the new BMW car inventory.

BMW mulls on using a new modular/expendable platform for the new generation 1 Series which will also feature the distinctive M front-end bumper. The new BMW 1 Series is expected to be offered in three and five door variants even as coupe and convertible variants are also in the production phase.

The new BMW 1 Series will have a slightly longer wheelbase and wider track than the current model. It will also borrow some of the interior features from the current 5 Series to make it more luxurious. In the engine department, new three and four turbo engines will be used across the 1 Series models, from a 1.3 liter engine with 136 horsepower to a new 1.3-liter turbo powerplant developing 177 horsepower. The gasoline version, dubbed N30, comes in displacements of 1.2 and 1.5 liters with power output of ranging from 70 to 184 horsepower. At the high-end of the line-up, the 135i will be using the N55 Twin-Scroll engine.

BMW Megacity: The World’s First Volume-Produced Car made from Carbon

The BMW Group is once again breaking new ground with the Megacity Vehicle (MCV), due to come onto the market in 2013: "The Megacity Vehicle is a revolutionary automobile. It will be the world's first volume-produced vehicle with a passenger cell made from carbon. Our LifeDrive architecture is helping us to open a new chapter in automotive lightweight design. The electrification of a vehicle requires new concepts in vehicle architecture and body construction in order to exploit the potential of the new emission-free drive system to optimum effect. With the revolutionary LifeDrive concept, the BMW Group engineers are developing the car’s architecture from scratch and adapting it to the demands and conditions of future mobility. The goal: to offset the additional weight of an electric vehicle – typically 250 to 350 kilograms. To this end, the BMW Group is focusing on the innovative high-tech material carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP).

The LifeDrive concept consists of two horizontally separated, independent modules. The Drive module integrates the battery, drive system and structural and crash functions into a single construction within the chassis. Its partner, the Life module, consists primarily of a high-strength and extremely lightweight passenger cell made from CFRP. Furthermore, the new vehicle architecture opens the door to totally new production processes which are both simpler and more flexible, and use less energy.

The BMW Group is also aiming to be the force behind the best drive systems over the years ahead – systems boasting outstanding efficiency, performance and smoothness, even if it is electricity rather than fossil fuels that are converted into propulsion. To this end, the BMW Group is vigorously driving forward the technical development of electric powertrains. Preview of the Redesigned 2011 BMW 3 Series

BMW has announced substantial enhancements to the 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, including outstanding style updates for 328i and 335i models and a new engine for 335i models. The 2011 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models will go on sale in Spring 2010. Unchanged are each car's essential attributes of rear-wheel drive (xDrive is available on the Coupe), close-to-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, remarkably precise steering, and skillfully engineered suspension.

All-new is the engine for the 335i model. This turbocharged, all-aluminum engine features nearly the same 'short block' and 3.0-liter displacement of its predecessor, but the result is an engine that is more responsive, more fuel efficient, and cleaner-running. Preserved is the previous engine's output of 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, and a 7,000 rpm redline. The 6-speed manual gearbox remains standard, and the well-known 6-speed Steptronic automatic is optional, now featuring ''pull-style'' shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel.
